Rosary:      1st Saturday of month @ 8:30 a.m.

Confessions:  Confessions are heard from 30 minutes until 10 minutes before weekend Masses, from 20 minutes until 5 minutes before weekday Masses, and by appointment.

Baptisms:  Pre-baptismal instructions given on the 3rd Thursday of the month and Baptisms take place on the Sunday following after 7:00 a.m. Masses.  Contact the rectory to make arrangements.

Marriages:  Make contact at least six (6) months prior to the anticipated wedding date.

Anointing of the Sick:  In the event of serious illness, please call the rectory.

New Parishioners:  Please introduce yourself to Labbe after Mass and come by the rectory during the  week to register.

Good Friday, 2009, members of the St. Nicholas Catholic Church of Lydia, LA, led by Father Labbe, and friends, took part in the annual Walking Station of the Cross in Grand Marais.

St. Nicholas Catholic Church - Brief History

  • September, 1849:  Madame Appoline Patout notifies the bishop of her intent to construct a Chapel, 30 feet wide by 50 feet long, on her plantation.
  • May, 1852:  Madame Patout donates eight arpent parcel of land and church to be "baptized by the name of St. Nicholas" to Archbishop Antoine Blanc.  Charles Olivier donates ten acres, adjacent to the property donated by Mme. Patout.
  • November, 1868:  St. Nicholas is established as parish, becoming the 13th parish in the diocese of Lafayette.
  • July, 1870:  The original properties donated by Mme. Patout and Mr. Olivier were exchanged for an equal number of acres located in Patoutville where the former Rectory, Parish Hall and cemetery are still located.
  • March, 1913:  Two additional acres purchased where a small mission chapel, named St. Joseph was built.  it was moved in 1955 to the location where St. Nicholas Church stands.
  • June, 1955:  Additional property purchased, expanding frontage to over 800' and depth to 300'.
  • April, 1958:  More land purchased, brining total to 15 acres.
  • October, 1964:  Hurricane Hilda destroys both St. Nicholas church and St. Joseph Church.  Plans made to build a new church in Lydia.
  • September, 1965:  A fire during Hurricane Betsy destroys the new Rectory only five weeks after Fr. Hebert moved in.
  • December, 1965:  New Church and Rectory completed.  First Mass celebrated on December 19th.
  • 1972-1973:  Construction of St. Nicholas Life Center.
  • 1976:  Parking lot and circle in front of Church are paved and lighting installed.
  • June, 1977:  Rev. Mr. L.J. Freyou is ordained and assigned to St. Nicholas.
  • September, 1977:  St. Nicholas Parish Council is chartered.
